Leather Jackets - Repair a Hole or Tear at Your Kitchen Table

Leather jackets can be worn with many different clothing styles. They can be worn year round with anything, from jeans to expensive slacks. You will see it. You will see the dreaded tear. Leather can be repaired easily. Leather is strong and durable, which means that repairs are almost invisible.

Home repair is possible for most tears and holes less than 2 inches in length or 2 inches in width. If the tear is more than 2 inches in diameter, it's best to take it to a professional for repair. To stop the hole growing larger, if it is small enough to fit the tip of an ink pen's tip, you can use a hammer to pound the jacket shut with your hands. You can fix any size tear in your leather jacket or motorcycle leather jacket right in your kitchen. You decide.

Here's what you need. You will need a sharp pair of scissors, a hammer, some paper, and a pencil. Any type of paper will work. You can also use super glue or garment glue. A small piece made of cheesecloth, linen or another thin, almost transparent cloth. A small piece of matching leather slightly larger than the tear or hole. You can find it in your jacket's pocket or lining, or you can buy a piece from a fabric store. You can have one glass, a bottle or a single serving of your favorite beverage. Iced tea, beer, and wine are all good options. To repair the damage, follow the steps below. Leather is a hard material so take your time. It is very durable, but you can make it work with some patience.

Cut a small circle with the scissors around the hole. You should make the hole large enough to eliminate any jagged or rough edges. An oval cut is also possible if the damage is more oval-shaped.

After you've taken the scissors out, enjoy a glass of your favorite beverage. Place the paper sheet on your kitchen table and trace the outline. Next, place your jacket on top. The outline of the new cut should be traced on the paper. Be as exact as possible.

This outline will help you cut the leather replacement piece to the right size. You can always trim it slightly larger. It is important that the leather fits snugly into the tear. After you've put down the scissors, enjoy a second glass of your beverage.

To smoothen the surface, place the leather patch into the tear or hole. A piece of linen or cloth should be cut at least 1 inch wider than the new patch. If you wish, take another sip of your beverage.

Apply glue to the back of the new patch. Cover the patch with glue for about one inch. Then, cover the patch with the cloth. The jacket should be covered with cloth. This will secure the patch. To secure the patch, press down with your hand. Keep a heavy object on top of the area until glue dries. Take a sip of your beverage and then relax.

Your favorite leather jacket and coat is now repaired. The drink part, while optional, is very helpful in these types of repairs. This makes the whole process much more enjoyable and relaxing. It's worth it.
